prevent that. 00:13:25.749 --> 00:13:38.249 <v SPEAKER_1>So to start off this episode, before we get to some of the verses dealing with slander, I want to make sure that we all understand a little bit about the terms that we are using as we are using them. 00:13:39.209 --> 00:13:53.249 <v SPEAKER_1>And the reason for this is that in English, when we hear the word slander, what we generally hear is a legal term, because the legal profession, for better or worse, has managed to monopolize this particular term. 00:13:53.849 --> 00:13:55.209 <v SPEAKER_1>And that's for a number of reasons. 00:13:55.229 --> 00:13:57.629 <v SPEAKER_1>People have watched a lot of crime dramas and things like that. 00:13:57.649 --> 00:14:05.929 <v SPEAKER_1>And so slander means, to the English ear, the publication of a false statement, which is essentially the legal definition of it. 00:14:07.589 --> 00:14:12.369 <v SPEAKER_1>And you may be thinking, well, there's a difference between slander and want to make about the term slander is that used in this context, in the moral context, in the context of scripture and the Christian life, it does not have the exact same scope as slander used in the harm him if it were published, and you go out and become a gossip, which gossip is a related matter that is also a sin, but you go out and become a gossip, and you spread this far and wide, you are
